Alternative Treatments
Alternative or complementary treatment benefits cover therapies outside mainstream Western medicine to the extent the insurer lists them—commonly acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic, and sometimes Ayurveda or traditional Chinese medicine, depending on the market and product. Cover is almost always optional, with annual monetary caps and a requirement that treatment be delivered by a registered practitioner where regulations require it.
Insurers often expect a referral from a medical doctor or evidence that the therapy is part of a broader treatment plan for a diagnosed condition, rather than general wellness. Experimental or unlicensed modalities are routinely excluded.
If you rely on regular complementary sessions, compare caps in your currency and whether visits must be pre-authorised. In some Asian host countries, popular local therapies may fall outside the insurer’s recognised practitioner list unless pre-approved. We help you read the fine print so lifestyle preferences do not collide with claim-time surprises.
